In the complex of the Portuguese Synagogue stands the oldest functioning Jewish library in the world: Ets Haim–Livraria Montezinos. In 2003 UNESCO placed this library on its Memory of the World Register in recognition of its universal importance.
During a guided tour of Ets Haim you will learn about the first Sephardic Jews who settled in Amsterdam, their school system, and the role that Ets Haim played in this education. The guide will also talk in some detail about the library’s history and show you several of the finest items in the collection.
N.B. Ets Haim is not accessible to regular visitors. Only those who reserve a guided tour can visit it. Ets Haim – Livraria Montezinos is the oldest functioning Jewish library in the world. It has occupied its current premises in the marvelous complex of the Portuguese Jewish Synagogue in Amsterdam since 1675. In 2003 UNESCO put the library on the Memory of the World list, thereby recognizing its universal importance.
