Magicians and illusionists, they never really disappear. Yet something changes around 1900: magicians leave the village green and the fair and find the big stage in theatreland. They are the superstars of their age, with sensational shows and spectacular acts: the 'Golden Age of Magic' has arrived. 

Jewish illusionists feature prominently in this new theatrical genre. Performance offers opportunities for Jews who are still excluded from many other professions: on stage, all that matters is talent! 

Abracadabra introduces magicians like Harry Houdini, Horace Goldin and Alexander and Adelaide Herrmann. In an age of technical innovation, they develop their own tricks and acts. The world-famous Okito descends from the Dutch Jewish Bamberg family. For six generations they ply their trade as magicians, embodying the genre at its height. 

Vanishing, escaping, levitating, dangerous illusions, how do they do it? Abracadabra takes you behind the scenes. Come and try out these tricks yourself: saw your mother in half or make your brother disappear. Hans Klok, the Netherlands’ greatest illusionist, is ready to help you in an exhibition for young and old. 

Abracadabra runs from 25 September 2026 to 29 March 2027 at the Jewish Museum.
