The Jewish Cultural Quarter is located in the heart of the old Jewish neighbourhood. What did this area used to look like? What role did it play in the past? And how does it relate to the rest of Jewish Amsterdam today?

You will find out during this walking tour, which connects key monuments throughout Jewish Amsterdam.

What will you learn?

This tour ties in with history, citizenship education and world orientation, and is tailored to the level of the pupils.

  • You will learn about the history of Jews in Amsterdam.
  • You will recognise and understand the stories behind well-known and lesser-known monuments in the former Jewish quarter and the Plantage area.
  • You will learn which monuments are dedicated to remembering the persecution of Jewish residents of Amsterdam during the Second World War.

The tour is available in Dutch or English. It can also be offered in German, French, Spanish or Hebrew, but availability in these languages is limited.

Yes. Let us know how many classes you plan to bring, and we will help you create a suitable programme. Pupils will be divided into groups of 15, with each group assigned its own guide.

Preparation is not required.
Tip: watch the video What is Jewish? (7.5 minutes) with your class beforehand. In this short film, Jewish teenagers explain what it means to be Jewish.

No. A visit to the Jewish Museum or the Portuguese Synagogue is not included, but it is a valuable addition to this programme.

If you would like to add a museum visit, please mention this in your booking. We will create a suitable schedule for your group. Please note that the cost of a museum visit is not included in the price of this programme.

Practical information

Planning a school visit? Here is some practical information to help your visit run smoothly.

You will be walking through the centre of Amsterdam for an hour. Wear comfortable shoes to avoid sore feet.

Primary schools and schools for special needs education in Amsterdam can make free use of bus and boat transport through De Cultuurbus. De Cultuurbus brings your class not only to the Jewish Cultural Quarter, but also to other cultural institutions throughout Amsterdam.
