Candlelight Concert: Semjon Kalinowsky & Nikolai Abramov

Concert
February 19

Hundreds of burning candles and the wonderful acoustics in the Portuguese Synagogue set the stage for unique evening concerts. Prayer of Remembrance is a programme for viola and piano, featuring compositions based on Jewish liturgy and new musical discoveries.

Semjon Kalinowsky studied viola in Lviv and Gdańsk and now lives in Lübeck. He is a passionate advocate of his instrument, that he, in his own words, ‘attempts to liberate from the tarnish of disparaging prejudice’. He plays together with numerous musicians, as part of Trio Arpeggione, and, for many years, together with his wife, the late Bella Kalinowska.

Semjon has been researching old music manuscripts in European libraries; another way of enlarging the repertoire for viola. In Prayer of Remembrance, his discoveries will be combined with classics like ‘Kol Nidrei’ by Max Bruch (1838–1920) and ‘Prayer’ from A Jewish Life by Ernest Bloch (1880–1959).

Nikolai Abramov is born in Tbilisi and studied in Moscow. He’s been living in Lübeck since 2021, thanks to a stipend of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). There he started his practice as a concert pianist and teacher.
