Candlelight Concert: Marcel Worms

Concert
April 10

Hundreds of burning candles and the wonderful acoustics in the Portuguese Synagogue set the stage for unique evening concerts. Pianist Marcel Worms has compiled a program entitled Jewish Composers without Borders.

Sinds the 1990s, Marcel Worms has an international career both as a solo pianist and in chamber music ensembles. He has released albums from Bach to Glass; from Federico Mompou to Erik Satie. He is also known for his concert readings in collaboration with a variety of Dutch authors. Together with Eleonore Pameijer, he has recorded music by Jewish composers persecuted during the war.

For this concert at the Portuguese Synagogue—a few days before we mark 80 years since the war—Worms will present a wide variety of composers and styles. Jewish composers whose work was without borders: Bernstein, Copland, Gershwin and Milhaud mixed modern-classical with light music and jazz. Dutch composers such as Dick Kattenburg also incorporated dance music and blues.
