Candlelight Concert: Marc Crofts Klezmer Ensemble

Live concert among hundreds of burning candles
Location: Portuguese Synagogue
Time: 7.30pm - 8.30pm (doors open at 7.00pm)
Hundreds of burning candles and the wonderful acoustics in the Portuguese Synagogue set the stage for unique evening concerts. The ensemble around Swiss violinist Marc Crofts plays klezmer supplemented with folk music as diverse as the origins of the musicians.
Marc Crofts’s mother comes from Ashkenazi and Sephardic families, his father is English, and he grew up in Lausanne, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Together with musicians from Switzerland, France, Poland and Bulgaria, he plays klezmer, the traditional music of the Jewish communities in Eastern Europe.
The gathering of these musicians is as diverse as the music they play, where Balkan ornamentation meets jazz harmony, a Greek introduction serves as a preamble to a Yiddish song, the beginning of a Greek melody ends in a Yiddish song, or a Ukrainian piece that shows Turkish influences. In short: music as cultural exchange.
